Introduction

The Internet of Things (IoT) landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by the need for more efficient, flexible, and scalable connectivity solutions. This shift is fueling the transition from traditional physical SIM cards to embedded SIM (eSIM) technology, which fundamentally changes how large-scale IoT deployments are managed. Teltonika’s eSIM routers spotlight the need for a reliable eSIM partner, and 1oT fills that gap with simple, scalable management and a variety of integrated profiles for specific regions, project or application.

Why the shift to eSIM for IoT devices?

The shift to eSIM is centered on ease and accessibility. Unlike traditional SIM cards, which require physical insertion and replacement, eSIMs are directly embedded into devices. They can be programmed and reprogrammed (provisioned) remotely over the air (OTA), making activation and ongoing management simpler and more cost-efficient.

Put Simply: eSIM makes activation and provisioning easier, faster, and more cost-effective, since the SIM is built into the device, profiles can be added, switched, or managed remotely without any physical swaps.

The core advantages driving this shift include:

Advantage Description
Remote Profile Switching Profiles can be switched without manual intervention, streamlining carrier changes and management.
Smaller, More Durable Designs eSIMs are smaller and directly embedded, enabling robust and compact designs suitable for harsh industrial environments.
Support for Multiple Profiles Enables global roaming and allows users to choose the most cost-effective option wherever their devices are deployed.
Scalability Users can quickly roll out new deployments and manage larger fleets, minimizing the need for physical intervention.
Enhanced Security eSIMs include secure elements and remote management capabilities, offering enhanced security compared to traditional SIMs. Infrastructure under strict standards and certifications.

Significance of bootstrap connectivity

Taking things one step back; Bootstrap Connectivity is the essential first network profile on an eSIM that allows a device to get online. After this initial connection, the device is ready to download new profiles and switch carriers remotely.

Without a bootstrap profile, the SIM cannot communicate with the network. In practice, bootstrap profiles make large IoT deployments practical by removing the need for physical SIM handling and enabling fully remote provisioning from day one. An alternative for bootstrap provisioning is WiFi, which narrows down the applications and limits new profile provisioning options.

The perfect match: Teltonika devices and 1oT

With over 25 years of experience in the IoT industry, Teltonika Networks is a strong partner of 1oT. Teltonika Networks’ advanced hardware paired with 1oT’s flexible eSIM technology creates seamless and robust IoT connectivity solutions.

With 1oT, users can find the right solution by pairing reliable hardware with carrier-independent eSIM services.

Enabling zero-touch deployment at scale

Component Role
Teltonika Provides the hardware platform with "Bootstrap functionality" and "Zero-Touch Deployment" capabilities, allowing the router to automatically connect and request a profile without human intervention.
1oT Provides the essential global eSIM profiles and remote SIM provisioning services (via SM-DP+ server communication) needed to complete the zero-touch process, eliminating physical SIM card logistics.

Delivering a truly global and simplistic solution

Component Role
Teltonika Offers the hardware standardization through the "eSIM single global SKU" and the flexibility of "Multiple profile support (up to 7 eSIM profiles)."
1oT As a connectivity broker and certified GSMA SAS-SM vendor, 1oT is the single source for multiple operator profiles, realizing Teltonika's vision for "Global deployment ready" by removing the complexity of managing multiple contracts and regional SIMs.

Seamless remote management and orchestration

Component Role
Teltonika The Remote Management System (RMS) provides a unified platform for device and profile management, including "Cloud-based eSIM profile management" and "Over-the-air configuration."
1oT 1oT's platform can integrate with RMS to provide deep control over the SIM lifecycle management, bulk profile operations, and centralized billing/reporting. Together with 1oT profiles, users will get access to 1oT Terminal SIM Management Platform.

RUT9X series with eSIM bootstrap capabilities

Confirmed eSIM-Enabled Models:

RUT951 – Industrial router with eSIM support and bootstrap profile included.

RUT956 – eSIM (up to 7 profiles) with RMS-controlled bootstrap functionality.

RUT976 – Next-generation 5G RedCap model; bootstrap support currently in development.

Future-proof eSIM architecture (SGP.22 with SGP.32-like capabilities)

Teltonika’s eSIM + RMS ecosystem already enables several SGP.32-style operational benefits, including:

• Remote profile download and switching via RMS

• Zero-touch deployment using eSIM Bootstrap

• Multi-profile management (up to 7 profiles supported)

• Streamlined large-scale fleet management without physical SIM handling

RMS and provisioning/activation systems

Remote Management System (RMS) features:

  • Cloud-based eSIM profile management via WebUI and RMS platform.
  • Resource code activation system for credits and data packs.
  • Over-the-air configuration and firmware updates.
  • Credit-based monitoring (30 days per credit, first credit free).
  • VPN services and secure remote access capabilities.

Bootstrap profile implementation:

  • Automatic activation within 1 hour if no physical SIM is detected.
  • Restricted traffic allows only RMS, DNS, DHCP, and NTP.
  • SM-DP+ server communication for profile downloads.
  • Zero-touch deployment eliminating field technician requirements.

What is 1oT’s SGP.22 consumer profile?

SGP.22, the consumer eSIM standard, can be effectively used on routers with LPA‑equivalent clients.  Effectively, the SGP.32 standard builds on the same framework but is purpose-designed for IoT and removes many of the consumer-specific requirements - Same architecture, without the hassle.

How the provisioning works

RUT241 unit with eSIM capability comes with a factory-loaded bootstrap profile. This profile provides a small, temporary data channel that allows the router to register on the network and establish outbound connectivity.  The bootstrap’s only purpose is to get the device online long enough to retrieve its operational 1oT eSIM profile.

In order to use the router’s eSIM functionality, you need to navigate to Teltonika WebUI, 198.168.1.1, and insert the username and password listed on the router. After logging into device WebUI for the first time, you will be greeted by a Setup Wizard. On the third step of Mobile, you will get a notification about the bootstrap eSIM profile being detected.

If you skipped the Setup Wizard, you navigate to 1. System → 2. Setup Wizard → 3. Mobile.

Step 1 - Click Switch to eSIM button – to set default SIM to eSIM and to start the process

Step 2 - You will receive a confirmation message to switch to eSIM. The default SIM will be switched to an eSIM, and the SIM switch rules used for the Bootstrap profile will be disabled.

Step 3

  • Enter the desired eSIM Name (optional)
  • Enter the Activation code – provided by the eSIM provider

Step 4 - Once the Download button is active, press it to start the process

In a few moments, you will get a success message of eSIM profile added. The temporary eSIM Bootstrap was removed at this point of the setup.
